Applying the specially designed loops over the tips of your skis creates friction between the ski and snow, improving your ability to control your skis.  With two levels of friction/control, you can easily adjust the brakes according to your requirements.

Alternating between extreme control and moderate control is as simple as adjusting the red seam from the bottom of the ski to the top.  With the red seam on the bottom of the skis, you can trek down a slope as if using snow shoes.  Shifting the red seam to the top of the ski provides moderate control to assist in navigating steep descents or adding friction on ascending slopes.
